Guyana: COVID-19 Cases Reported in Lower Corentyne, Region 6

A cluster of COVID-19 infections has been confirmed in Region 6 (East Berbice-Corentyne), raising concerns about a potential outbreak in the area. The latest reports indicate that the Lower Corentyne Secondary School in Rose Hall Town has seen more than 10 students test positive for the virus. The initial case was identified last Friday, and subsequent testing on Sunday revealed additional infections among students.

In response to the situation, school activities have been temporarily suspended to allow for fumigation and sanitization of the school premises. The Ministry of Education has advised parents, teachers, and students in the district to re-implement strict precautionary measures, including the mandatory wearing of face masks.

Mehalai Mcalmont, a Regional Councillor for East Berbice-Corentyne, expressed concern over the situation, noting that the presence of COVID-19 in schools suggests it may also be present in homes. Mcalmont highlighted the need for widespread testing in the region, stating, “If there is a number of cases… generally we should have had by now a rollout of testing done.”

This cluster at the Lower Corentyne Secondary School follows confirmed cases at the GuySuCo Training College in Port Mourant and the Port Mourant Primary School. Fortunately, regional educators have reported that none of the infected students are critically ill, with all cases currently classified as asymptomatic.

Despite the rising number of infections across multiple schools, regional medical administrators have not provided public comments. Attempts by HGP Nightly News to reach the Minister of Health and the Regional Health Officer for information on containment strategies and testing sites have been unsuccessful.

Former Minister of Health, Dr. Karen Cummings, criticized the lack of communication from health authorities, urging them to maintain transparency and continue public health education. She emphasized the importance of personal hygiene and community sanitation to mitigate the spread of the virus.
