Guyana: CANU Intercepts Over 1,600kg of Illegal Drugs in Six Months

The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) has reported the removal of more than 1,600 kilograms of narcotics from circulation during the first half of 2026. The seizures primarily consisted of cocaine and marijuana, with CANU Head James Singh addressing the media on Friday to provide details of the operations.

According to Singh, officers seized over 250 kilograms of cocaine and more than 1,400 kilograms of marijuana between January and June this year. These figures are indicative of the agency’s ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking operations throughout Guyana.

Singh explained that many of the cocaine seizures involved shipments that were transiting through Guyana en route to international markets. He noted that investigators have successfully intercepted drugs before they were loaded onto vessels and have also uncovered instances where narcotics entered Guyana from neighboring countries for further distribution.

Furthermore, Singh emphasized the significance of intelligence sharing and collaboration with international law enforcement agencies. He mentioned that joint investigations have played a crucial role in several major drug busts.

In addition to its anti-trafficking initiatives, CANU has been enhancing its public awareness programs. The agency has developed an educational book aimed at schools, focusing on the dangers associated with drug use. CANU is also collaborating with the Guyana Police Force and community stakeholders to engage communities impacted by the illegal drug trade, encouraging residents to provide information that could assist in their efforts.
