Guyana: APNU Advocates for Continued Relations with Cuba Amid CARICOM Statement Discussion

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has expressed the view that Guyana should sustain its strong relations with Cuba while also balancing its broader international partnerships, including its relationship with the United States. This topic was discussed during APNU’s weekly press conference on Friday, where questions arose regarding Guyana’s decision to reserve its position on a recent CARICOM statement concerning measures imposed on Cuba.

Member of Parliament Juretha Fernandes spoke on behalf of the coalition, reiterating that APNU’s stance aligns with previous comments made by Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton. According to Fernandes, Norton has emphasized that Guyana should not abandon Cuba, a country that has historically provided support to Guyana.

Fernandes articulated that APNU believes the relationship with Cuba should be viewed in the context of longstanding diplomatic ties, cooperation, and the assistance Cuba has offered over the years. She also dismissed the notion that supporting Cuba equates to being against the United States, asserting that Guyana is capable of fostering constructive relationships with multiple international partners without having to choose sides.

For APNU, the focus is on achieving balance in foreign policy. Fernandes stated that the coalition remains committed to what it considers Guyana’s traditional foreign policy principles, which include respect for longstanding allies and the pursuit of diplomatic independence. She argued that international relationships should be influenced not only by current geopolitical pressures but also by historical context, national interests, and principled engagement.

While APNU has not released a new formal statement regarding the latest CARICOM matter, Fernandes confirmed that the party’s position on Cuba remains unchanged. The coalition advocates for maintaining constructive relations with Cuba while also engaging with other strategic partners to safeguard the country’s interests. These comments come as Guyana’s foreign policy decisions are under public scrutiny, particularly as the nation navigates regional obligations, traditional alliances, and increasing international interest related to its economic and geopolitical significance.
