Guyana: APNU Addresses Concerns Over Response to President Ali’s Land Acquisition

The opposition coalition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), led by the People’s National Congress Reform, has addressed concerns regarding its response to the recent controversy surrounding President Irfaan Ali’s acquisition of land for a modern farm. APNU parliamentarians Dr. Dexter Todd and Sherod Duncan recognized that many Guyanese are upset about the situation.

Dr. Todd noted that discussions on social media indicate widespread dissatisfaction with the President’s actions, suggesting that he should resign to facilitate a thorough investigation. He stated, “I think there is a very sizeable population that is outraged about what has been happening. I believe all the Guyanese.”

Mr. Duncan pointed out that while President Ali developed the land for poultry, livestock, and high-value crops, many ordinary citizens have been waiting for up to 15 years for small plots of land. He emphasized that the feelings of anger among the public arise naturally.

However, Mr. Duncan indicated that the main opposition party, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), should take the lead in addressing the issue, as they were the first to highlight it. He expressed a desire for WIN to provide a comprehensive response, stating, “It is WIN that raised this issue and we’d love to see them continue on this one.”

Despite this, he assured that APNU has the necessary tools to respond effectively. President Ali has denied claims regarding the size of the farm, stating it is less than 75 acres, and he has not disclosed specific figures about the farm’s profits or operations.

Dr. Todd refuted claims that APNU has been inactive, explaining that the party convened a meeting to discuss potential actions in the National Assembly. He mentioned that APNU’s parliamentary leader proposed reviewing the Integrity Commission’s powers and drafting legislation to address corruption concerns.

Dr. Todd acknowledged that mobilizing support would require careful organization and strategy. He expressed intentions to engage the international community regarding the land scandal, emphasizing the President’s responsibility in the matter.

He also noted that the Constitution protects the President from legal action while in office. In response to public sentiment for protests, Dr. Todd stated that APNU has learned that effective opposition extends beyond street demonstrations, echoing sentiments from party leadership.
