President Irfaan Ali has announced that Guyana is in the process of establishing a centralized and coordinated national intelligence system. This initiative aims to enhance the country’s capacity to detect, track, and respond to significant security threats. During a recent press conference, the President emphasized that the system will facilitate real-time information sharing among national agencies, regional partners, and international allies.
Ali stated, “Our intelligence system will be centralized and coordinated,” while noting that the implementation of this approach has already commenced, although he refrained from disclosing specific operational details. The proposed system will feature an integrated national database, multi-agency task forces, AI-supported threat monitoring, and predictive risk analysis.
The model is designed to support tracking in several critical areas, including:
One of the key components of the system will focus on enhancing traceability within the gold sector, which is expected to bolster the credibility and security of Guyana’s gold and mining industry. Additionally, the government is working to strengthen its counterterrorism and counter-extremism capabilities.
Ali highlighted the necessity for Guyana to prepare for both traditional terrorism threats and emerging forms of extremism, given the observed movement of extremist cells in the region and globally. He stated, “Not only counterterrorism, we’ve seen in our region, in neighbours, we’ve seen the displacement of cells all across the world, so we have to look at not only terrorism in its hard form, but extremism.”
The security model will encompass digital monitoring of extremist behavior, tracking of terror financing, border watch list programs, and cyber monitoring. The President mentioned that the system will cover various areas, including ports, airports, maritime spaces, and logistics hubs, while also addressing emerging threats related to cryptocurrency and new payment systems.
Furthermore, Ali noted that Guyana is collaborating with Interpol, the Regional Security System, the United States, and technology providers to develop this comprehensive security system. He acknowledged the ambitious goal of achieving these objectives by 2030, stating, “To achieve all of this by 2030 is an enormous task, but we are working diligently to do this.”
