Police have arrested a 24-year-old porter in connection with the death of 21-year-old Kerryann Standford, whose family has disclosed that she was pregnant at the time of her alleged murder. Standford’s body was discovered buried in a shallow grave at Chelsea Park, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara. The suspect has been identified by the family as the father of Standford’s young daughter.
A relative, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that Standford was expecting another child when she died. “She currently pregnant, so it’s a pregnant girl he bury there, kill and bury,” the relative said. This information was reportedly evident when family members identified Standford’s decomposed body.
Standford, who had been caring for her ailing grandfather, left home on July 3, indicating she would return. Her mother spoke with her the following day, but after that, the family lost contact. Initially, the family did not panic, as Standford would sometimes leave home and return. However, their concerns grew when they were called to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital to identify her body.
“We didn’t expect this,” the relative expressed. “It is very sad to know that you murder somebody and… bury her in a shallow grave.” The family noted that there were no apparent signs that Standford’s relationship with the suspect would lead to such a tragic outcome.
Detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Standford’s death. The incident has left her relatives mourning both the young mother and her unborn child. The family is advocating for a thorough investigation and stronger measures to address relationship-related violence.
“We hope that the police and everybody does their investigation properly and get everything in place,” the family member added. They emphasized that many tragedies could be prevented if warnings about abusive relationships were taken more seriously.
