From Selling Vegetables to Commonwealth Games Glory: Jhandu Kumar Wins India’s First Medal at CWG 2026

India’s first medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is a story of sheer grit and determination. Bihar’s Jhandu Kumar etched his name into the history books by winning the bronze medal in the Men’s Heavyweight Para Powerlifting event with a best lift of 190 kg. His journey from poverty to the podium is nothing short of extraordinary.

Afflicted by polio as a child, Jhandu grew up in Harnaut, Nalanda district, facing severe financial hardship. He sold vegetables on the roadside and later drove an e-rickshaw during the COVID-19 pandemic, earning around ₹400 a day. Despite the exhausting routine, he trained every night, saving whatever he could for gym fees and nutrition.

In 2023, with no sponsors or financial backing, Jhandu made a life-changing decision. He sold his e-rickshaw—his only livelihood—to fund his participation in the National Para Powerlifting Championship. His performance impressed Paralympic champion Rajinder Singh Rahelu, leading to a place at the Sports Authority of India training centre in Gandhinagar.

On 24 July 2026, Jhandu delivered the performance of his life. His 190 kg lift secured the bronze medal and India’s first podium finish of the Games. From selling vegetables to standing on a global podium with the tricolour flying high, his remarkable journey is a testament to perseverance and courage.
