Tariq Ali proposes unified autonomous Kashmir as solution to India-Pakistan tangle

Writer and commentator Tariq Ali has waded into the Kashmir debate, linking the brewing crisis in Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PaJK) to the unresolved dispute between India and Pakistan. In a recent interview, Ali argued that the deep emotions fueling the conflict will not simply fade, but that the region lacks visionary leadership.

Ali rejected full independence as unrealistic, instead proposing a unified, autonomous, and democratic Kashmir. This entity would be jointly guaranteed by India, Pakistan, and potentially China, drawing parallels to former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf’s four-point formula.

“It could be a place where all South Asians can meet,” Ali said, emphasizing the potential for peaceful coexistence. The proposal comes as economic grievances and political accountability deficits fuel unrest in PaJK.

Critics may question the feasibility of such a plan given historical hostilities. However, Ali’s intervention adds a notable voice to the discourse, urging a reimagining of the Kashmir issue beyond traditional state positions.
