Territorians Rank Happiest in Australia, But Government Focuses on Crime, Poll Reveals

A recent national poll has found that Territorians are the happiest people in Australia, with 75.3% reporting happiness. The finding, highlighted in a letter to the editor by Alice Springs resident Ralph Folds, stands in stark contrast to the Northern Territory Government’s public messaging, which has been dominated by crime and crisis.

Folds points out that the Territory boasts some of the most affordable housing in the country, the lowest mortgage stress, short commutes, a warm climate, close-knit communities, and easy access to nature. It also leads the nation in labour force participation and has seen a strong surge in job vacancies. Yet, the government’s narrative focuses overwhelmingly on crime, a strategy that was politically effective during the election campaign that brought the CLP to office.

‘But governing is not campaigning,’ Folds writes. He warns that a crisis narrative, once established, becomes self-reinforcing and keeps attention locked on problems, even as strong indicators of progress, opportunity, and liveability emerge. Record happiness levels, affordability, employment strength, and lifestyle advantages all receive far less attention than they deserve.

The result, according to Folds, is a narrowing of the Territory’s identity in political communication—from a place of opportunity to a place defined primarily by its challenges. He argues that narratives drive investment, migration, and confidence, and that the government must promote the Territory’s strengths to capitalize on them.

Alice Springs, for example, offers one of the most comprehensive ranges of medical services of any town its size. The town’s congenial spirit was also on display at the 67th Annual Alice Springs Show, which continues tomorrow. Folds urges the government to shift its focus and sell the Territory’s success story to attract skilled workers, families, and investors.
