Fireball, a soca artist, recently responded to claims made by Machel Montano, another major figure in the industry. Fireball admits that Machel Montano is one of Trinidad’s greatest artists, but disputes Montano’s assertion that he ‘started’ his career. Fireball acknowledges that they met in a competition where Machel guided many artists, not just him. He has also voiced transparency concerns about competition rules. He denies ever disrespecting Machel, whom he considers the ‘GOAT of soca’, and says his commentary on rules was meant for several artists accused of performing on more than one truck. He emphasizes that his goal is to ensure accountability and fairness in the culture. He also suggests that there are undisclosed issues around his career being paused after international success, partly due to being blacklisted by top artists in Trinidad. He accuses industry figures of limiting his local opportunities and ignoring equality. Fireball claims he has advised Machel for years to give more consideration to younger artists and argues for honesty and clarity going forward.
