The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has suspended the implementation of a one-match ban imposed on United States forward Folarin Balogun following his red card during the FIFA World Cup 2026™ match against Bosnia & Herzegovina on 1 July.
Balogun was sent off for serious foul play following a VAR review. After the match, he returned to the field to celebrate with his teammates despite having been expelled, prompting FIFA to open disciplinary proceedings for alleged breaches of Articles 14 and 66 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
The committee found Balogun guilty of both offences and imposed a one-match suspension along with a US$40,000 fine.
Although the suspension would ordinarily have ruled him out of the United States’ Round of 16 clash against Belgium, FIFA exercised its discretion under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code to suspend the implementation of the ban for a probationary period of one year.
As a result, Balogun remains eligible to play immediately. However, if he commits another infringement of a similar nature during the probationary period, the suspended one-match ban will be activated in addition to any new disciplinary sanction.
The US$40,000 fine was split equally between the two disciplinary violations, with the U.S. Soccer Federation declared jointly liable for payment.
FIFA also stressed that the referee’s decision to issue the red card was not overturned. According to the governing body, the disciplinary committee only exercised its authority to suspend the implementation of the automatic one-match suspension after considering the specific circumstances of the case.
The decision has generated significant debate across the football world, particularly after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly confirmed he had asked FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review Balogun’s case. FIFA has maintained that its judicial bodies are independent and that the decision was made in accordance with the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
