Caguas, Puerto Rico – The Museo del Salón de la Fama de la Medicina Puertorriqueña has opened in Caguas, honoring the contributions of Puerto Rican physicians and medical institutions. The museum aims to inspire future health professionals by providing an educational environment that highlights the historical significance of prominent medical figures. Dr. Yocasta Brugal, president of the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine, said the idea for the museum began about ten months ago when she was approached about establishing a Hall of Fame in each of Puerto Rico’s four medical schools. “We decided to start in San Juan Bautista. Today that conversation has become a reality, and I am proud that our school is the starting point for preserving the legacy of these great men and women,” she explained. The Hall of Fame website, salonfamamedicina.com, currently lists 35 inductees. Its mission is to preserve the scientific, humanistic, and moral legacy of the honorees for future generations. In addition to the physical museum, a digital platform, museomedicinapr.com, will be available to students, faculty, and staff at each medical school. The online portal will provide access to biographies, photographs, videos, and historical news related to the inductees and affiliated hospitals. The project has received support from several local companies, including MCS de Puerto Rico, Grupo Hospitalario Manatí, Bayamón and Mayagüez Medical Center, SIMED, and Laboratorios Borinquen. These organizations, which have played significant roles in Puerto Rico’s healthcare history, have committed to preserving the museum’s legacy. The San Juan Bautista School of Medicine offers a Doctor of Medicine program, a Master’s in Public Health, a Doctorate in Nursing Practice for Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioners, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and an LPN-BSN Bridge program.
