El comú d’Ordino no desobeirà la llei sobre les càmeres de seguretat

The Comú d’Ordino has confirmed it will comply with national regulations regarding the use of body-worn security cameras by traffic agents. Eduard Betriu, the deputy consul of Ordino, stated that the administration intends to follow the law, expressing his belief that all other municipal corporations in Andorra will do the same.

Betriu’s comments follow a recent meeting of the country’s consuls, during which the leaders of Andorra la Vella and Sant Julià de Lòria, Sergi González and Cerni Cairat, suggested they might begin using surveillance systems by December 1 as a form of pressure on the Ministry of Interior. The ministry, through the National Video Surveillance Commission, is currently reviewing whether the use of such devices by traffic agents aligns with existing legislation.

While acknowledging the urgency of the matter, Betriu did not commit to the December deadline proposed by other municipalities. Instead, he indicated that the goal is to implement the systems between the end of this year and the beginning of 2027. He emphasized that the administration must remain within legal boundaries, stating that no public administration should act against the law.

Betriu expressed optimism regarding the ongoing review process, noting that the government appears willing to issue a favorable report to allow the use of the cameras. He called for a more conciliatory approach between the government and the municipalities to resolve the issue, suggesting that unnecessary controversy should be avoided.

Despite his call for cooperation, Betriu reiterated the importance of the technology for the safety of both the public and the agents, citing daily incidents that justify the use of body cameras in extreme cases. He urged the executive branch to take decisive action to finalize the necessary regulations.

In other business, the Comú d’Ordino approved a modification to the urban planning regulations for zones 1 and 2 to permit the construction of single-family homes. Additionally, the council awarded a national contract for waste collection services.
