Cyprus manufacturing outpaces EU industrial recovery in 2025

**Cyprus Manufacturing Outpaces EU Industrial Recovery in 2025**

*Cyprus – 31 August 2026* – According to Eurostat, EU industrial production recorded a 2.9 % increase in 2025 in constant‑price terms, marking the first annual rise since 2022 after declines of 1.5 % in 2023 and 1.9 % in 2024. In nominal terms, the value of sold production grew from €5.87 trillion in 2024 to €6.09 trillion in 2025.

The Eurostat report, which measures the value of manufactured goods sold by industry, shows that the recovery was uneven across sectors. Among the five largest manufacturing groups, food products posted the strongest growth at 3.8 % (constant prices) and were 11.2 % higher than in 2015. Machinery and equipment rose by 3.3 %, while motor vehicles, trailers and semi‑trailers increased by 0.6 %. Conversely, chemicals and chemical products fell by 1.4 %, and fabricated metal products (excluding machinery and equipment) also declined by 1.4 %, the only manufacturing groups to record declines over the past decade.

Cyprus’s manufacturing sector performed notably better than the EU average. Data from the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat) indicate that manufacturing production rose by 4.4 % in the first eleven months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. Overall industrial production on the island increased by 3.6 % for the full year, with manufacturing identified as the main driver.

Key highlights from the Cystat figures for 2025 include:

– A 4.6 % increase in manufacturing output in December 2025 versus December 2024.
– Growth across several sub‑sectors: other non‑metallic mineral products (+10.9 %), wood and cork products (+9.1 %), basic metals and fabricated metal products (+8.0 %), and furniture and related activities (+7.2 %).
– Declines in paper and paper products and printing (‑9.5 %) and textiles, wearing apparel and leather products (‑3.8 %).
– A 2 % contraction in electricity supply.

The report notes that Cyprus’s industrial structure differs from that of larger EU economies, which may partly explain the stronger relative performance. The island’s broader economy also benefited from gains in tourism, construction, trade and manufacturing during 2025.

Eurostat’s data suggest that while the EU as a whole has returned to industrial expansion after two years of decline, recovery is not uniform across all sectors. Food, machinery and equipment were among the strongest performers, whereas chemicals and fabricated metals continued to face pressure.

For Cyprus, the robust manufacturing growth provides further evidence that industrial activity contributed positively to the national economy in 2025, despite mixed results within individual sub‑sectors.
