**Xinjiang Accelerates Clean‑Energy Development as Part of China’s National Green Transition**
*Urumqi, Sept. 7 2026* – A vast desert area west of Korla in Xinjiang’s Uygur Autonomous Region has been converted into a large solar‑panel field, underscoring the region’s commitment to expanding renewable energy. The 1.3‑gigawatt (GW) photovoltaic (PV) plant, operated by PetroChina Tarim Oilfield and located in the Shangku high‑tech zone, is one of the largest solar projects in Xinjiang and the oilfield’s first million‑kilowatt‑class plant.
The facility covers 35,000 mu (about 2,333 hectares) and has produced more than 1.6 billion kilowatt‑hours (kWh) of clean power since it was connected to the grid in January 2025. A centralized control room monitors the plant in real time, and a small staff team uses intelligent cleaning robots and drones for routine inspections.
Lei Ting, executive director of Tarim Oilfield’s new‑energy department, said the company is expanding green‑power supply systems to help build a zero‑carbon industrial park and to provide a replicable model for low‑carbon transformation in the petrochemical sector.
The Shangku project is part of a broader suite of renewable‑energy initiatives across Xinjiang. Other major projects include a 1‑GW wind‑solar hub near Urumqi and a 4‑GW solar farm in Ruoqiang County. By the end of 2025, Xinjiang had established six 10‑GW‑class renewable‑energy bases, with a total installed renewable capacity of 169 million kilowatts (169 GW), representing 64 percent of the region’s total power capacity.
Xinjiang also plays a key role in China’s west‑to‑east power transmission network. As of 18 March 2026, the region had transmitted 304.36 billion kWh of renewable electricity to other provinces, accounting for roughly 30 percent of its total outbound power supply, according to the local branch of State Grid. In 2025, Xinjiang’s green‑power trading volume reached 43.43 billion kWh, a 230 percent year‑on‑year increase, and a record high that saved 13.13 million tonnes of standard coal and cut 35.47 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, the Xin
