China’s Kimi K3 AI Model Rivals US Giants, Shocks Tech Industry

A new artificial intelligence model from Chinese startup Moonshot has stunned the US technology industry with capabilities that rival leading systems from OpenAI and Anthropic. The model, named Kimi K3, has been ranked number one for front-end coding capability by evaluation platform Arena, with CEO Anastasios Angelopoulos calling it ‘the single biggest release of the year.’ The launch came just before Chinese President Xi Jinping opened the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, where he emphasized that AI development should be a ‘symphony of global cooperation.’ Kimi K3 is the latest in a series of Chinese AI advances, following Z.ai’s GLM-5.2 model. Despite US export controls on advanced chips, Moonshot’s model costs half as much as OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol to use, posing revenue challenges for US firms. However, some analysts, like Patrick Moorhead, describe the reaction as an overreaction similar to the DeepSeek launch. The release intensifies competition and comes amid US accusations of intellectual property theft, which Beijing rejects as groundless.
