Calypso Rose Honored at Caribbean Music Awards in Trinidad, Shares Liberia Story

Calypso Rose was honored with the Elite Calypso Award at the 4th Annual Caribbean Music Awards, which took place in Trinidad and Tobago for the first time. In an interview with Slam 100.5 FM, the iconic calypsonian said she felt “very happy and very proud and very much alive” to be recognized in her mother island, Trinidad.

Rose, who is originally from Tobago, which she called the sister island, expressed her joy at being honored in Trinidad. “I am very happy to be here,” she said. The award ceremony marked the first time the Caribbean Music Awards were held in Trinidad and Tobago.

During the interview, Rose shared an anecdote about her song “Pepper Soup.” She recounted that while in Liberia, the song was playing on the radio. “The president of Liberia gave me an award,” she said, adding that everyone was asking about the name of the soup.
