Barrackpore Man Sentenced to Death for Double Murder in 2024

Rishi Motilal, a resident of Barrackpore, has been sentenced to death for the murder of his sister-in-law, Tara Ramsroop, and her one-year-old daughter, Shermaya Motilal. The sentencing, delivered by Justice Rishi Singh, followed the harrowing details of how the 2024 incident unfolded at Motilal’s residence in Rip Road, Barrackpore.

During the trial, the court heard that the killings were the culmination of a domestic dispute. The prosecution presented evidence that Motilal attacked Ramsroop with a cutlass, an action followed by the murder of her young daughter. It was argued that he intended the child’s death to spare her from further suffering, given the violence she had witnessed. Justice Singh emphasized the gruesome nature of the crime, dismissing any defenses attempted by Motilal’s legal team, including a plea for manslaughter due to mitigating circumstances.

The case has sparked widespread attention due to its brutality and the defense’s unusual claims. The defense sought to propose that Motilal’s actions stemmed from a momentary lapse of reason, a narrative the court decisively rejected. Instead, the judgment focuses on the premeditated and deliberate nature of the acts committed. Key to the prosecution’s case was the evidence of the attacks’ calculated severity, which undermined any arguments for diminished responsibility.

This judicial decision underscores the gravity with which Trinidad and Tobago’s legal system is treating domestic violence-related crimes, particularly those that result in the loss of life. In recent years, the country has seen increased awareness and condemnation of domestic violence, with advocacy groups calling for more stringent legal repercussions as a deterrent against such crimes.

The sentence reflects a broader public outcry and demand for justice, especially in cases involving vulnerable victims such as women and children. This case not only highlights the tragic outcomes of unresolved domestic conflicts but also serves as a stern reminder of the legal consequences awaiting those who resort to fatal violence.
