A man from Barrackpore has been handed a death sentence by hanging following his conviction for the 2024 murders of his common-law wife and their infant daughter. Rishi Motilal, also known as ‘Cook Meat’, was found guilty on two counts of murder by Justice Nalini Singh, who delivered the sentence on Monday.
Motilal was convicted for the brutal killings of 31-year-old Tara ‘Geeta’ Ramsaroop and their 14-month-old daughter, Shermaya Motilal. The court heard that the incident unfolded at Motilal’s home along Rig Road, Barrackpore, after a dispute between the couple escalated violently.
According to the State’s case, Motilal first attacked Ramsaroop with an iron pipe, before arming himself with a cutlass. He used this weapon to repeatedly assault his wife before slitting her throat. The same weapon was then used to murder their infant child.
The horrific act has sent shockwaves through the community, underscoring the urgent need to address domestic violence in the region.
