**Political Tensions Rise in France Over Continued Support for Ukraine**
A significant political conflict has emerged in France regarding the nation’s ongoing support for Ukraine, with prominent figures exchanging sharp criticisms ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The dispute was triggered by comments from Louis Aliot, vice president of the far-right National Rally (Rassemblement National) and mayor of Perpignan. In an interview with BFMTV, Aliot suggested that a National Rally government would cease aid to Kyiv. He argued that France faces pressing domestic challenges in healthcare, education, and the economy, and questioned the continued allocation of state funds for military supplies to Ukraine.
Édouard Philippe, former prime minister and leader of the center-right Horizons party, strongly condemned this stance. Philippe, a potential candidate in the 2027 presidential race, stated that halting support for Ukraine would benefit Russia and that a weakened Kyiv would pose a direct threat to the security of both France and Europe. He further accused the National Rally of demonstrating “weakness” toward the Kremlin, citing the party’s historical opposition to arms shipments to Ukraine and sanctions against Moscow.
Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, responded by criticizing Philippe’s record as prime minister. She noted that during Philippe’s tenure, Russian President Vladimir Putin made official visits to France, including trips to the Palace of Versailles and Fort de Brégançon. Le Pen maintained that she has consistently advocated for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict and the convening of an international peace conference since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.
The debate highlights deepening divisions within the French political landscape as the country looks toward the 2027 presidential election. Current polling indicates that Le Pen remains a leading contender, while Philippe is viewed as a potential rival in a second-round runoff.
