ASJA Expresses Concern Over Trinidad and Tobago’s UN Vote

The Anjuman Sunnat ul Jamaat Association Inc. (ASJA) has expressed concern over Trinidad and Tobago’s recent vote at the United Nations concerning the reappointment of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

In a media release issued on Sunday, ASJA said it had taken careful note of the country’s position at the UN and, while respecting the Government’s sovereign right to determine foreign policy, believes the vote appears to represent a departure from Trinidad and Tobago’s longstanding support for the rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people.

The organisation pointed to the country’s previous foreign policy, highlighting the role played by former Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Dr. Amery Browne, in Trinidad and Tobago’s recognition of the State of Palestine in 2024. ASJA said that decision reflected the nation’s commitment to international law, diplomacy, peace and the protection of human dignity.

ASJA has called on the Government to review its current position, taking into account what it described as Trinidad and Tobago’s proud tradition of supporting justice, humanitarian principles and peaceful dialogue among nations.

Beyond the diplomatic implications, the organisation also drew attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine, saying innocent civilians, particularly children and families, continue to suffer the effects of the conflict.

ASJA encouraged people of goodwill, especially members of the Muslim community, to continue praying for the people of Palestine while advocating for peace, justice and the preservation of human life.
