Sílvia Orriols, leader of the political party Aliança Catalana, praised Andorra’s immigration model during a recent visit to the Principality. Orriols described the Andorran approach as an example to follow, stating that the model is viewed with admiration from Catalonia.
Addressing previous comments in which her party compared the town of La Seu d’Urgell to Ceuta regarding migration, Orriols clarified that her criticism was directed at the Spanish state rather than Andorra. She argued that the Spanish government is responsible for failing to adequately control its borders. According to Orriols, Catalonia is negatively impacted by both the immigration policies of the Spanish state and the departure of individuals from Andorra whose work contracts have concluded.
Orriols commended Andorra for implementing measures to manage migration and criminal activity, suggesting that the country has recognized potential issues in time to address them. She also noted that she perceives a high level of public awareness in Andorra regarding these social changes. However, she expressed concern over what she described as the depersonalization of European countries, noting that she observes similar demographic shifts in Andorra as in other parts of Europe.
Regarding Andorra’s potential association agreement with the European Union, Orriols advised caution, warning that such integration involves obligations that may not always be beneficial. She suggested that Andorrans should carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of the agreement.
During her visit, Orriols stated that Aliança Catalana is open to discussions with political groups across Europe that do not impose a political cordon sanitaire against her party. She confirmed that she had no institutional meetings during her time in Andorra and had not been contacted by any local political officials.
