Zohran Mamdani has officially taken office as the 112th mayor of New York City, marking a historic moment in the city’s political landscape. Sworn in during a private midnight ceremony at the Old City Hall subway station, Mamdani pledged to serve the city with his hand on a Quran. At 34, he is one of the city’s youngest mayors in recent history, and has several firsts to his name: he is the first Muslim, the first South Asian, and the first African-born mayor to lead New York City. His rise from state assemblyman to the city’s highest office reflects his commitment to tackling the rising cost of living, with policies focused on fare-free buses, universal child care, rent freezes, and city-run grocery stores. Following his private oath, a public ceremony was held at City Hall, with notable figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in attendance. As mayor, Mamdani takes on the task of addressing issues such as housing affordability, infrastructure, public safety, and economic inequality.
