Today, August 11, we join the world in celebrating the only musical instrument invented in the 20th century and recognized by the United Nations as originating right here in Trinidad and Tobago — the steelpan.
From humble beginnings in Laventille and Port of Spain to taking center stage at festivals and concert halls across the globe, the steelpan has become a symbol of our creativity, resilience, and cultural pride.
The UN officially designated August 11 as World Steelpan Day in 2023 to honour the instrument’s cultural significance, its impact on music, and the talented pannists who keep the tradition alive.
Fun Fact: The steelpan is the only acoustic instrument created in the 20th century, born from the ingenuity of the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
Today we celebrate our invention, our music, our culture — because the steelpan isn’t just an instrument, it’s part of our national heartbeat.
Share your favourite pan memories or performances in the comments and let’s fill our feed with music.
