World Cup final gets first-ever halftime show: 30-minute break sparks debate

For the first time in history, the World Cup final will feature a Super Bowl-style halftime show, stretching the usual 15-minute break to up to 30 minutes. The 2026 final between Argentina and Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will see performances by Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber, and BTS, curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin. The show aims to raise $100 million for children’s education through the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, with all performers waiving their fees.

The extended break has already stirred debate among football purists, who argue it disrupts the flow of the game. Players and coaches will need to adjust their routines to avoid cooling down too much. Last year’s Copa America final featured a similar 26-minute break with Shakira performing, but this is a first for the World Cup.

The opening ceremony, starting 90 minutes before kickoff, will include Tom Cruise, Robbie Williams, Laura Pausini, and Nicole Scherzinger. Streamer IShowSpeed has confirmed his presence, likely drawing boos from Argentine fans after his criticism of Lionel Messi. Jennifer Hudson will sing the US national anthem, while viral rumors point to María Becerra for the Argentine anthem.
