A Trinidad and Tobago woman has spoken out after she said a group of young boys robbed her in her own neighbourhood, leaving her angry and questioning how safe people are even close to their homes.
Recounting the incident, the woman said the boys grabbed some of her belongings. She indicated that although they did not manage to take her bag, something was stolen during the encounter.
The experience left her shaken and “real mad”, with the woman saying the incident showed just how serious the country’s crime situation has become.
“And there’s where this country come to. You’re not safe even in your own neighbourhood. You’re not safe,” she said.
Following the robbery, the woman said she has now made a major decision about her personal safety, declaring that she will no longer go anywhere unless she can get a drop directly home.
Her frustration also extended to the issue of self-defence.
The woman questioned what citizens are expected to do when confronted by criminals, arguing that people who carry something to protect themselves could find themselves being blamed if an attacker is killed during an act of self-defence.
“If you protect yourself and they dead, you’re wrong,” she said while expressing frustration over what she sees as the difficult position faced by people trying to protect themselves.
She called for citizens to take a stronger stand against crime, declaring: “This madness has to stop. And we, the people of Trinidad and Tobago, have to take charge.”
The woman also expressed disappointment that motorists did not stop during the incident, saying, “Not a car stopped when that happened to us. Not a car.”
Her account paints a troubling picture of an encounter that has now changed how she intends to move around, with the woman saying she no longer feels comfortable travelling unless she knows she can get safely home.
The woman’s account of the robbery has not been independently verified, and further details about what was stolen, the exact location of the incident and whether a police report was made were not immediately available.
