Starting this Monday, Belizean commuters will experience new fare increases on public buses, a development that has sparked widespread discontent among the public, as confirmed by a Facebook poll showing 96% opposition. These increases, sanctioned by the Ministry of Transport as part of a newly approved plan, affect both regular and express bus routes, resulting in higher travel costs for everyday commuters.
Under the new fare structure, the cost of travel from Punta Gorda to Belize City on a regular bus will now reach up to $39 one-way, with express services rising to a maximum of $43.50. Similarly, travelers from Corozal to Belize City will face fares of $15.25 one way on regular runs and $18.50 for express buses, demonstrating significant hikes many commuters say they are unprepared to manage.
The immediate aftermath of the announcement saw a torrent of criticism from public transport users. One commuter expressed her concerns, stating that while some might manage the increase, the cost could become prohibitive without assurances of better bus conditions. “Imagine having to pay more every day only to travel in aging, uncomfortable buses,” she remarked, reflecting a sentiment echoed by many.
Transport Minister Dr. Luis Sabinet has responded to the public’s grievances, acknowledging that their concerns are justified. He explained that the decision was a difficult but necessary response to threats of strike action from northern bus operators within Billy’s Bus Association. Minister Sabinet stressed the government’s intention to balance commuter affordability against the operational needs of bus companies.
Notably, the National Bus Company has committed to temporarily holding its fares at existing rates, providing a reprieve for commuters, especially those using southern routes where fare hikes are most pronounced. However, the company cautioned that if fuel prices continue to rise, fare revisions may become unavoidable.
As commuters grapple with impending changes, the focus shifts to whether the promised improvements in bus quality and service delivery materialize. The Ministry of Transport faces a challenging dual mandate of fostering a sustainable transport environment while ensuring access remains equitable, particularly as economic pressures and essential service costs rise.
