Why Norwegians eat lunch as early as 10:30am

Norwegians are known for their early lunch habits, often eating between 10:30am and midday. This routine can be surprising for foreigners, especially those from Southern Europe where lunch is served much later.

The early lunch is largely driven by the typical Norwegian workday. Many employees start work between 7:30am and 8am and finish by 3:30pm to 4pm. With a working day of 7.5 to 8 hours, an early lunch fits naturally into the schedule.

Family life also plays a role. Children start school at 8am and have lunch before noon. Early work hours allow parents to drop off and pick up kids easily. Dinner is often served between 4pm and 5pm, ensuring kids are full before evening activities.

Additionally, Norway’s long dark winters mean early darkness, making an early dinner feel natural. This cycle of early meals is a well-established cultural norm that reflects the country’s work-life balance and adaptation to daylight.
