WATCH: Pinetown dad recalls shielding his children with his body during shootout with hijackers

A Pinetown father, 52-year-old Sidney Hill, survived a shootout with alleged hijackers outside his home in KwaZulu-Natal earlier this week. Hill, who manages a private security company and has 25 years of experience in the security and protection sector, was preparing to drive his children to a local grocery store when the incident occurred. Dashcam footage of the encounter shows a vehicle pulling up alongside Hill’s bakkie. Two men exited the vehicle and approached the family; one suspect reportedly held a firearm to the head of Hill’s son, who was standing at the gate, while the other approached Hill. According to Hill, the second suspect opened fire, prompting him to shield his daughter and return fire. During the exchange, Hill’s bakkie rolled into a nearby tree after he took his foot off the accelerator. KZN police spokesperson Colonel Paul Magwaza confirmed that Hill returned fire and fatally wounded one of the suspects. Hill sustained minor injuries from bullet fragments to his knee and arms. He noted that his firearm experienced a brief malfunction due to the impact with the tree, but he was able to clear it using muscle memory developed through consistent training. The following day, police arrested a 35-year-old suspect in KwaDabeka. The individual faces charges of attempted carjacking, attempted murder, and the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Police reported that the suspect was found with an unlicensed firearm and 14 rounds of ammunition at the time of his arrest. Hill expressed concern regarding the trauma experienced by his children, who witnessed the incident and the aftermath. He stated that he is now looking to relocate his family. While he initially expressed concern over the circulation of the dashcam footage on social media, he acknowledged the public’s varied reactions to the event.
