The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has announced a collaboration with the Ministry of Public Utilities and DESALCOTT to reschedule the annual maintenance shutdown of the Point Lisas Desalination Plant to August 19-23, 2025. This decision comes after numerous complaints from citizens about the shutdown’s unpredictable timing in previous years, which disrupted preparations for important national events. The new schedule aims to minimize inconvenience, allowing communities to prepare better for the maintenance period.
WASA, under its new Executive Evolution Team, is committed to addressing public concerns and will implement mitigation strategies, including prioritizing truck-borne water distribution and providing detailed supply schedules for affected areas in advance. The shutdown is expected to affect approximately 40 million gallons of water daily, which is crucial for the Point Lisas Industrial Estate and for augmenting supplies to regions in Central and South-West Trinidad.
In a forward-looking move, DESALCOTT has agreed to conduct future maintenance outside critical periods when the public requires uninterrupted water supply for festivities, particularly in September, October, and November. Acting CEO Jeevan Joseph emphasized WASA’s commitment to equitable and sustainable water services, aligning with the national development goals. Additional reminders will be issued as the August shutdown date approaches.
