WASA Imposes Tobago Water Restrictions As Carnival Demand Pressures Supplies

The Water and Sewerage Authority has announced immediate restrictions on certain uses of its water supply in Tobago, citing the threat of a serious shortage as the island prepares for Carnival demand.

The measures remain in force until further notice. They prohibit the use of hosepipes and similar equipment supplied with WASA water to water private gardens or wash private motor cars. Sprinklers and pressure washers used for those purposes are also covered.

In the announcement published by TTT on October 29, WASA attributed pressure on Tobago’s water resources to drier conditions associated with El Niño. The authority said increased consumption during Tobago Carnival makes conservation particularly important for maintaining supplies to households, businesses and essential services.

WASA said the restrictions apply specifically to its Tobago supply system. It cited Section 49(1) of the Water and Sewerage Act, Chapter 54:40, which allows restrictions where the authority considers that a serious water shortage exists or is threatened.

Residents, visitors, event organisers and vendors are being asked to plan their water use carefully throughout preparations, celebrations and clean-up. Accommodation providers and other businesses should monitor consumption and prevent unnecessary use, the authority said.

For appropriate cleaning tasks, WASA recommends buckets, mops and controlled quantities of water. It also urges people to turn off unused taps, repair leaking fittings promptly and avoid using drinking water for water play or other activities that consume large volumes.

The authority emphasised that conservation should accompany proper hygiene. Water needed for safe food preparation, handwashing and effective sanitation should still be used while avoiding wastage.

Property owners and occupiers were reminded to keep water fittings in good condition. Members of the public can report visible leaks through WASA’s established customer service channels.

WASA said the measures form part of its AquaForward National initiative and Dry Season Water Supply Management Plan. It will continue monitoring water resource conditions and provide further updates.
