The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has issued a strong condemnation of recent acts of vandalism at several key water supply facilities in Tobago. The damage from these incidents is presently disrupting water distribution to multiple communities across the island.
Four critical wells were targeted in the vandalistic acts, including Arnos Vale Well #4, Bacolet Well #3, Bloody Bay Well #1, and the Claude Noel Highway Well. Preliminary investigations suggest that the damage inflicted was not accidental, but deliberately executed, causing operational disruptions and a reduced capacity to maintain a steady water supply.
Numerous communities are now experiencing interruptions to their pipe-borne water service. Among the affected areas are Crown Point, Canaan, Bon Accord, Buccoo, Black Rock, Lowlands, Lambeau, Patience Hill, Signal Hill, Les Coteaux, Plymouth, Culloden, Sea View, Bloody Bay, Castara, L’Anse Fourmi, and Parlatuvier.
In response to these acts, WASA has escalated security measures at its facilities and established a dedicated vandalism hotline, inviting the public to report any suspicious activity near water infrastructure. Moreover, the Authority reminds the public that vandalism of such infrastructure is a serious criminal offence under the laws of Trinidad and Tobago, which may attract substantial fines and imprisonment.
While efforts are being made to assess the full extent of the damage and restore normal operations, WASA has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and is seeking the understanding and patience of residents as restoration work continues.
