Veterans group calls for ‘reset’ with new Northern Ireland Secretary over Troubles legacy

This report covers veterans group calls 'reset' with key details and context.

The Northern Ireland Veterans Movement (NIVM) has congratulated Chris Bryant on his appointment as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and called for a ‘reset’ in relations with his office. The group, which represents 16 veterans organizations and thousands who served during Operation Banner, said it looks forward to engaging constructively with Mr Bryant at the earliest opportunity.

In a statement, the NIVM said that under Hilary Benn’s tenure, there was a widespread belief among its members that their concerns were not listened to, and that the direction of travel on Legacy risked resurrecting lawfare that has already caused immense harm. The group criticized the Labour-produced Northern Ireland Troubles Bill, currently before Parliament, as ‘deeply unpopular among veterans’ and ’emblematic of a disconnect’.

The group urged Bryant to ‘reset the relationship’ and restore confidence that the government will treat veterans with fairness, dignity, and respect. The NIVM called on the new Secretary of State to drop the ‘hated’ Troubles Bill and work with all legacy stakeholders to build a credible, balanced, and just framework.

The call comes amid ongoing debate over how to handle prosecutions and inquiries related to the Troubles, with veterans seeking protection from legal proceedings they view as unfair.
