Veterans body urges Chris Bryant to scrap Troubles Bill and reset legacy relations

This report covers veterans body urges chris with key details and context.

The Northern Ireland Veterans Movement (NIVM) has congratulated Chris Bryant on his appointment as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and called for ‘a reset’ in relations with his office. The body, which represents 16 veterans groups and thousands who served during Operation Banner, said many continue to live under the shadow of legacy processes and lawfare.

NIVM said veterans felt unheard under former Secretary Hilary Benn, criticizing the direction of travel on legacy issues. The group singled out the Labour-produced Northern Ireland Troubles Bill, currently before Parliament, as ‘deeply unpopular’ and emblematic of a disconnect with the veteran community.

‘NIVM is glad to see the end of an approach that placed disproportionate weight on those representing perpetrators while sidelining those who served,’ the group stated. They urged Bryant to drop the ‘hated Troubles Bill’ and work with all stakeholders to build a credible, balanced, and just framework.

The new Secretary of State has an opportunity to restore confidence and treat veterans with fairness, dignity, and respect, the NIVM said. Bryant’s office has yet to respond to the call.
