‘Very negative forces’ raising concerns over AI, says Trump

United States President Donald Trump addressed the development of artificial intelligence on Sunday, dismissing recent warnings about the technology as the work of “very negative forces.” Speaking to reporters at his golf course in Ireland, Trump emphasized his desire for the United States to maintain its position as the global industry leader.

When asked whether the artificial intelligence industry should be subject to stricter regulation or a slowdown in development, Trump stated that while some guardrails could be implemented, he believes critics are raising concerns about scenarios that are unlikely to occur. He asserted that the United States currently leads China in the sector and described the U.S. as the most sophisticated country in the world, adding that “whoever wins AI wins.”

The president’s comments follow a week of heightened public discourse regarding the potential risks of advanced AI. Two researchers from the firm Anthropic recently issued warnings suggesting that rapid progress in the field could pose an existential threat to humanity. In response to these concerns, some industry leaders have advocated for a deceleration in model development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed a three-step framework on Saturday intended to manage development risks, while former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who recently resigned, called for international coordination to mitigate the dangers of a competitive race with China.

The Trump administration has largely maintained a supportive stance toward AI firms during his second term, and many technology companies have backed his initiatives. However, the Pentagon issued a warning earlier this year regarding potential risks associated with Anthropic’s models.
