Verdachte aangehouden in verband met dodelijke roofoverval

Paramaribo – Police arrested a suspect, identified only as T.V., in connection with an armed robbery that left Chinese entrepreneur Chen Hui, 33, dead on Friday morning. The incident occurred at the corner of David Simonstraat and Wilhelminastraat. According to Police spokesperson Michel Elskamp, the arrest took place during a joint operation involving Kapitale Delicten, the Regio Bijstandsteam Paramaribo, the Arrestatieteam and the Criminal Intelligence Unit. Elskamp confirmed that the robbery took place on Friday morning, around 3:30 a.m. Chen Hui and a 48‑year‑old passenger were traveling in a white Toyota Prado coming from Anton Dragtenweg. They stopped at the intersection because a vehicle was blocking the road. After that vehicle left, a white Toyota Vitz approached from behind and blocked the Prado’s lane. Three masked, armed men exited the Vitz and moved directly to the Prado. They smashed the vehicle’s windows, opened the driver’s door and seized a black bag of money. Chen Hui was shot in the chest and died at the scene. The attackers fled in the Vitz. Elskamp said the loot consists of both U.S. and Surinamese dollars, but the exact amount has not yet been determined. Earlier reports indicated that Chen Hui and his passenger had exchanged U.S. dollars that morning and had left with Surinamese dollars. Witnesses described the attackers as wearing black clothing and reported that multiple shots were fired. Police deployed several units to locate the remaining suspects, who remain at large. The arrest of T.V. is the first suspect to be publicly identified. Police continue to search for the other perpetrators.
