Venezuela Gov’t, Opposition to Begin US-Backed Talks on Electoral Reforms

Venezuela’s National Assembly (AN) and a group of former opposition lawmakers who served in the 2015–2020 legislature, led by Dinorah Figuera, have announced a joint working agenda aimed at ‘strengthening democracy’ in the country. The initiative, backed by the United States, is set to launch on August 1.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez confirmed the development, stating that the talks will focus on electoral reforms. The move represents a rare instance of cooperation between the government and opposition factions that have been at odds for years.

Analysts see this as a potential breakthrough in Venezuela’s prolonged political crisis, which has seen international efforts to broker dialogue. The US support adds a layer of significance, signaling possible shifts in foreign policy.

The opposition group, which includes former lawmakers largely seen as aligned with Juan Guaidó’s faction, has been recognized by the US as legitimate representatives. Details of the agenda remain sparse, but both sides have expressed optimism.
