Vehicle Importer Pleads for Customs Clarity on Hybrid Tax Issues

A vehicle importer in Trinidad and Tobago is sounding the alarm over new customs tax regulations that he claims are causing immense stress for both his business and customers. The changes, effective July 22, suddenly imposed taxes on previously exempt hybrid vehicles, leading to a significant price increase for consumers. He argues that the customs authorities did not clearly communicate these changes, raising questions about their implementation.

For the past two years, he has successfully imported mild hybrid vehicles under the guidelines established in 2022, which did not specify distinctions such as plug-in or full hybrids. Now, however, he faces obstacles, including delays in processing his documents as customs re-evaluates his imports.

His plea for clarity from the Minister of Finance highlights not only the financial impact on his business, which has pre-booked sales dependent on stable vehicle pricing, but also the broader implications for consumers in Trinidad and Tobago who rely on affordable hybrid options. The wholesaler stresses the need for open communication and expresses a willingness to meet with officials to discuss a resolution.
