UWI South Campus in Debe Revitalized as Rehabilitation Advances

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has expressed renewed optimism regarding the rehabilitation of the University of the West Indies South Campus in Debe, indicating that the project is now back on track. In a recent post on her official X account, she shared insights following a tour of the campus, where significant progress is being made after years of stagnation.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the reopening of the Debe campus is not merely about restoring infrastructure; it embodies a broader commitment to enhancing educational access and opportunities for citizens, especially those residing in South Trinidad. “Education for all. Opportunity within reach. The future is being built,” she stated, reinforcing the transformative potential of the campus.

The development of the Debe campus is a crucial step towards decentralizing tertiary education in Trinidad and Tobago. It aims to alleviate the burden on existing institutions and significantly cut down travel times for students seeking higher education. This initiative is expected to foster regional growth and enhance educational equity.

While an official opening date has yet to be announced, the Prime Minister’s visit signifies the government’s dedication to ensuring the project’s completion, aligning with broader educational and developmental goals for the country.
