Matthew Robar, an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces based at the Petawawa base in Ontario, is set to face a military court for allegedly sharing classified military information with Ukraine. The claim was first reported by The Kyiv Independent and later confirmed by a CBC investigation. On 4 November 2026, the chief military judge of Canada told reporters that Robar would be tried in a military court. According to CBC, Robar violated Canadian foreign intervention laws at the end of 2025 and breached his military oath. He allegedly passed operational information to Ukrainian contacts and supplied Ukraine with state secrets. He is also accused of lying to his superiors and unlawfully retaining a flamethrower. CBC reports that Robar began communicating with Ukrainian contacts in 2024 and met a Ukrainian representative in Lithuania that same year. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 December 2026 at the Petawawa base. The Canadian Department of National Defence said the matter is being handled by military courts and would not comment further on the active case. Robar and his lawyer have not issued any statements. Canada has been a major ally of Ukraine throughout the conflict. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on 16 October 2026 that Canada would provide an additional €500 million (US$580 million) in military aid to Ukraine.
