United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described a meeting with Chinese officials on Sunday as very successful, noting that the discussions focused on trade and artificial intelligence. The eight-hour session, held at JPMorgan Chase’s headquarters in New York, included Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and top U.S. trade official Jamieson Greer.
Bessent stated that the two nations discussed establishing a formal communication channel regarding artificial intelligence threats, which will be referred to as the U.S.-China AI dialogue. The Treasury Secretary confirmed that both sides have agreed to hold future meetings on the subject.
The discussions were intended to address ongoing tensions regarding trade, technology, and strategic concerns ahead of a scheduled summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which is set to take place Thursday in Washington. The talks also involved Chinese trade representative Li Chenggang.
According to officials, the dialogue covered potential guardrails for artificial intelligence development and the security of supply chains for critical minerals and rare earth magnets essential to U.S. manufacturing. The meetings may also address the status of previous trade agreements, including China’s commitments to purchase U.S. agricultural goods. Sources familiar with the matter indicated that working-level discussions could continue into Monday.
