US-Iran conflict: Saudi pipeline attack, Yemen crisis add to regional tensions

Regional tensions have escalated significantly following a series of military incidents involving Houthi rebels in Yemen, drone attacks on Saudi infrastructure, and ongoing disputes regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

The United Nations reported that fighting between Iran-backed Houthi rebels and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces has displaced nearly 86,000 people since July. The International Organization for Migration noted that more than 82,000 of these displacements have occurred since the beginning of September, coinciding with a large-scale Houthi offensive. The rebels have recently seized the Red Sea port city of Mocha and several strategic islands, strengthening their control over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

In response to the intensifying conflict, more than 2,000 people have fled Yemen for Djibouti, according to the International Organization for Migration. Djibouti, located across the strait, serves as a critical transit point and hosts military bases for several nations, including the United States, China, Japan, France, and Italy.

Houthi military spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree claimed the group conducted drone and missile attacks against a military base in the Sharurah province of Saudi Arabia. While the Saudi Civil Defence reported that sirens were activated in Sharurah, they did not confirm damage there. However, the agency stated that a projectile landed in the al-Tawwal governorate, injuring two people and damaging a mosque and several buildings.

Separately, Iraqi authorities announced a phased reopening of three border crossings with Iran following a temporary closure prompted by a drone attack on a Saudi East-West pipeline. Baghdad officials determined the drones were launched from Missan province, leading to the dismissal of the local military commander. While an alliance of Iran-backed Iraqi factions denied involvement, the Iraqi government closed the Shalamsheh, Al Shib, and Al Mandali crossings to reorganize operations and enhance security.

In the Strait of Hormuz, local Iranian authorities reported that a merchant vessel was struck by an unknown projectile near the islands of Hengam and Qeshm, resulting in one death and three injuries. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations confirmed an incident involving a vessel in the area and advised ships to transit with caution.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials stated that Tehran and Oman have reached an understanding regarding new entry and exit routes for the Strait of Hormuz. According to Iranian state media, the agreement establishes routes within Iranian territorial waters, though officials emphasized that the waterway remains closed to general traffic pending the fulfillment of seven conditions presented to the United States.

Additionally, maritime security reports indicate a resurgence in piracy off the coast of Yemen and Somalia. European naval forces confirmed that armed men briefly hijacked the MT Glamour this week before being deterred by a Japanese warship. Somali pirates also released the cargo ship MV Sward on Friday following a reported ransom payment, though four other tankers remain in pirate custody.
