The United States State Department has reportedly put a halt on immigrant visa processing for citizens of 75 countries, including more than 10 nations from the Caribbean. This decision, instructed through a State Department memo, has been implemented to allow for a review of the department’s screening and vetting procedures. The pause, which took effect on January 21, is set to remain in place indefinitely. Caribbean countries affected include Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The list also includes several countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. This decision follows the earlier remarks made last year by former US President Donald Trump, who pledged to ‘permanently pause’ migration from what he termed as ‘Third World countries’.
