Dr. Jenifer Neidhart de Ortiz, US chargée d’affaires in Trinidad and Tobago, commended Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s advocacy for citizens under authoritarian regimes during the Women in Leadership Conference. She highlighted Persad-Bissessar’s dedication to democratic values and her vocal defense of citizens’ rights who lack the freedom to criticize their governments. Neidhart de Ortiz drew attention to the threats of criticizing governments, pointing to countries like Venezuela and Cuba where power remains with a small elite. She reflected on her experiences of surveillance and intimidation while working on human rights issues, and the role of diplomatic negotiations in securing the release of political prisoners. The conference also discussed the role of women in shaping Trinidad and Tobago’s economy, with emphasis on the need for greater representation in leadership roles and high-growth industries.
