US chargée d’affaires in Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Jenifer Neidhart de Ortiz, lauded Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar for her bold stance against authoritarian leadership in the region. Speaking at the Women in Leadership Conference, Dr Neidhart de Ortiz appreciated the Prime Minister’s advocacy for citizens living under restrictive governments. She acknowledged Persad-Bissessar’s commitment to democratic values and her efforts to defend the rights of citizens who may lack the freedom to criticize their governments. The US diplomat cited the political situations in Venezuela and Cuba, warning that basic rights can lead to punishment in some societies. The conference also emphasized the role of women in Trinidad and Tobago’s economy, stating that while women constitute nearly half of the labor force, they are under-represented in senior leadership roles and high-growth industries.
