The US government has recently denied holding discussions with Saint Lucia concerning international education, including programs related to Cuba. This statement comes after concerns raised by Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J Pierre, who claimed the US had instructed his government to cease sending students to Cuba for medical training. However, the US maintains that it respects the sovereignty of nations in making decisions about their citizens’ education. Despite this, the US continues to voice opposition to what it sees as exploitation and forced labour in Cuba’s overseas medical missions programme. Meanwhile, the Trinidad and Tobago Government confirmed that it hasn’t received any such directive from the US, and the practice of sending its nationals to Cuba for medical training remains unchanged.
