Unlawful U.S. Airstrike Ignites Caribbean Crisis

On September 2, an unauthorized U.S. airstrike on a vessel in the southern Caribbean resulted in the death of eleven individuals. Following the strike, a body believed to be from the same vessel washed up on the shores of Cumana, Toco, Trinidad and Tobago, highlighting the proximity of the crisis. The military action was performed without Congressional approval or public evidence, violating UNCLOS and international law. The President did not notify Congress as required by the War Powers Resolution, instead, the strike was reported post-incident. Emphasizing the necessity for lawful drug interdiction, Pearce Robinson, the official issuing the statement, condemns the use of lethal force without due process. He states the incident as a direct insult to the peace and sovereignty of the region.
