In an extraordinary display of unity, members from both the United National Congress (UNC) and the People’s National Movement (PNM) came together in Princes Town to honor the life and service of Councillor Vashti Sharmin Sookhoo. The farewell ceremony, held at her home, brought together a diverse group of attendees, including family, friends, community organizations, and top political figures.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar was among the notable figures present, standing alongside Cabinet ministers, local councillors, and the broader UNC family. As tributes poured in, Sookhoo was celebrated for her unwavering commitment to public and community service, a sentiment echoed by many who knew her well.

Minister of Local Government Khadijah Ameen spoke warmly of Sookhoo’s loyalty, recalling their collaborative efforts during various electoral campaigns and times of community distress. Deputy Political Leader Jearlean John highlighted Sookhoo’s warmth and constant presence at UNC events, while Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo praised her longstanding contributions to the party.

Significantly, former PNM Minister of Local Government Kazim Hosein, along with PNM councillors and aldermen, also attended the ceremony, reflecting the respect Sookhoo commanded across political divides. This bipartisan attendance underscored the far-reaching impact of her service, not just within political circles, but throughout her community.

As the ceremony concluded, the UNC extended its deepest condolences to Sookhoo’s family, friends, and all those who had been touched by her life. The event served as a poignant reminder of Sookhoo’s enduring legacy and the unity she inspired among diverse groups.
