**UN Resident Coordinator Emphasizes Broader Goals of Mine Clearance in Azerbaijan**

Baku – Speaking at the 4th International Mine Action Conference in Azerbaijan’s capital, United Nations Resident Coordinator Nasar Hayat highlighted that demining efforts should extend beyond the removal of explosive remnants to include the restoration of livelihoods and the promotion of lasting peace.

Hayat told AzerNEWS that mine action “is not only about clearing contaminated land; it is an action to build peace, strengthen community resilience, and rehabilitate lives.” He described Azerbaijan’s mine contamination as “enormous,” but noted significant progress in recent years.

According to Hayat, the demining initiatives have enabled more than 38,000 displaced persons to return to their homes. He praised the country’s achievements in both clearing mines and supporting the reintegration of affected communities.

The UN official said that international organizations can contribute “global expertise and experience” to Azerbaijan’s mine action programs while also drawing lessons from the country’s experience to inform similar efforts elsewhere. He emphasized that the impact of mine clearance should be measured not only by the area cleared but also by subsequent outcomes such as the reconstruction of homes, the revival of agricultural activities, and the sustainable return of residents.

“Clearing the land is fundamental, but it is only the starting point,” Hayat said. “The ultimate goal is to make these lands productive and to ensure long‑term peace and livelihoods for the people who live there.”

The conference, which brings together experts and stakeholders from around the world, serves as a platform to discuss best practices and collaborative strategies for mine action. Hayat’s remarks underscore the UN’s commitment to supporting Azerbaijan’s ongoing demining work and to promoting broader humanitarian objectives linked to mine clearance.
