UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres urged governments, technology companies and civil society to take coordinated action to curb hate speech, saying the “toxic message is spreading fast and striking deep.”
Guterres made the remarks at the opening of a global conference on promoting inter‑religious and cultural dialogue, held in United Nations headquarters in New York on September 17.
The Secretary‑General highlighted the rapid growth of digital technologies that facilitate hate speech and called for stronger regulatory measures to keep pace with these developments.
He emphasized that the UN must work with partners worldwide to develop effective tools and policies that protect vulnerable communities from online hate.
The conference, organized by the UN Department of Global Communications, aims to foster dialogue and cooperation among member states, civil society groups and the tech industry.
Guterres’ remarks come amid growing concerns about the role of social media platforms in spreading extremist content and the need for global governance frameworks to address the issue.
